How then can man be justified with God? or how can he be clean that is born of a woman? Behold even to the moon, and it shineth not; yea, the stars are not pure in his sight. How much less man, that is a worm? and the son of man, which is a worm?
(Job 25: 4-6)
This is the question that John posed the people on the streets today. It is our firm conviction that we must expose every false way and remove every false hope so that people be left with no doubt as to the only means by which we can be justified with God. Therefore we declare how conversion to a religion (and that includes Christianity), a particular Denomination, Movement and/or Organisation will never justify a person. The Bible declares that the means of Justification that God has given us rests in a person (Not a religion) and that person is Jesus “the Christ, the Son of the Living God“!
It was quite interesting that, where John was preaching, nearby was a group of Muslims distributing their literature as well as two groups of Jehovah’s Witnesses and a devotee of the Hare Krishna Movement. John quoted from the scriptures declaring that the name of Jesus is the only name under heaven by which we may be saved, and that it is solely by faith in Him that we are Justified with God–something that these three groups deny.
Within Roman Catholicism salvation is by grace however the means by which we obtain that Grace is not by faith alone, it is by the sacraments. For this the Catholic needs the mediation of priests, because only an ordained priest of the Roman Catholic Church is qualified to administer the sacraments. John declared that rather than bring us to God Priests and such like separate us from God. Their followers have a sense that God is somehow still outside of their lives and remains distant. Christ came to reveal to us the Father and gave His life for us so that we may become sons and daughters of God. Through Him, and Him alone, are we reconciled to God and that this reconciliation came when He died on the Cross.
Thus there only remained one thing for us to do and that is to resign ourselves to our incapacity to justify ourselves by our own works, be they charitable or religious, and accept what God has done for us through Jesus Christ!
Afterwards Miguel preached. At one point a lady came to John to ask him if he was with Miguel. She was angry at what Miguel was preaching because she was a Roman Catholic and what he was saying about the papacy was “incitement to commit violence”! John pointed out that we are not inciting anyone to commit violence towards Catholics. She went off threatening to inform the police.
A man conversed with John. He was Romanian but of a region of Romania where the population is ethnically German. He explained that he and his wife were involved in setting up a new church in another town. He explained that he was encouraged to see us preaching here and asked a number of questions concerning the practicalities of preaching in the UK. John explained about where it is permitted and where it isn’t, and the legality of using P.A equipment, as well as the legality of distributing gospel literature free of charge to the people. He also asked John about the problem of preaching against sexual sins. John explained that as long as we read from the Bible, and show what the scriptures state, we do not break the law.
Both he and John had a long conversation concerning the state that the churches are in in Manchester, their rejection of the Bible as the means of prescribing and/or defining truth, and the level of compromise with churches that teach false gospels and compromise with the world. He and John exchanged details and will remain in touch.
Another man was listening to Miguel and engaged in a public debate with him. He was speaking about the Old Testament law concerning slavery. Miguel then said to him that he was a slave, which he flatly denied. Under the British system of law when a person is registered at birth, receives their National Insurance Number and/or applies for a passport, they are not a free man. In fact every British Passport holder is described as a “Subject of Her Majesty the Queen!” Suddenly a woman began to rage against Miguel for saying that the man was a slave. When Amélia approached her the woman began to threaten her with violence. At this point John stepped in telling her that there was no need for threats. She then accused John of being responsible for the Nazi Holocaust and stormed off declaring that we ought to be hanged and burned alive!
At this point an African lady, who described herself as a “Pentecostal” Christian, began to state that it was not the woman, but the Devil in her, that was doing those things. She had been speaking with Amélia before the incident. She carried on by saying that the devil cannot harm us or touch us if we are Holy before the Lord, and began talking with the man with whom Miguel had been speaking with when all this first happened.
John was able to share with the man and the Pentecostal lady went back to speaking with Amélia. After a while Amélia approached John being quite upset at something the lady had said to he. She explained how she had told Amélia to fast. Amélia explained to her that she couldn’t fast because she had diabetes. The lady then told her to stop taking her insulin because she was “healed in the name of Jesus”! John simply told her to ignore what the lady had told her. He and Amélia shared with the man about how such people are dangerous because so many people have died in the mistaken belief that they had been healed and stopped taking medication abruptly simply on the say so of the “healer”.
In the mean time Miguel could be heard rebuking the lady for her frowardness and pride.
This lady has been heavily influenced by Televangelists from America, and in her own country of Nigeria, who prey on the spiritually weak and immature, offering promises of guaranteed Health, Prosperity and Power to succeed in life. So many fall prey to these people because they appeal to the flesh nature. As the scripture says:
But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not. (2 Peter 2:1-3)
These people equate material gain with Godliness through their teaching that God rewards us materially in this life when we give our money sacrificially to them. Anyone who would dare to stand up to these hypocrites is denounced as being of Satan and enemies of God. These people rule their flocks and followers through fear. They do this quite subtly inferring that by withholding our money from them is being selfish, “robbing God” and/or showing a “lack of faith”!
The scriptures are quite clear as to what God thinks about them:
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows‘ houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation. (Matthew 13:14; Mark 12:40 & Luke 20:47)
Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children: Which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness; (2 Peter 2:14-15)
If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself. (1 Timothy 6:3-5)
As believers we have a specific instruction in what to do in relation to such people:- “FROM SUCH WITHDRAW THYSELF”
The team carried on conversing with the man who, unlike the woman who became enraged at something Miguel had said to him, was neither angry nor upset. None of these thing put him off from conversing, in fact he accompanied the team as the team walked to the train station in order to return home.
