Q.E.D. (Question, Explore, Discover)
QED is a two-day science and skepticism convention taking place at the Palace Hotel in Manchester on the 12th-13th April 2014.
Today the team stood outside the Palace Hotel offering copies of the publication, Bone of Contention–is Evolution True? by Dr. Sylvia Baker MSc., to those in attendance. One of the attendees even took several copies to place on the table inside the foyer alongside other conference materials. In fact, quite a number of attendees seemed eager to have copies, several actually coming out of the hotel to request copies.
Our presence there did cause a stir with several people hurling abuse, others mocking or asking questions in order to be able to mock (often just jumping on half of the answer and rolling with that in order to satisfy their antagonism), some others were more reasonable and genuinely wanted to engage in conversation.
One young woman came to offer an apology for the insulting behaviour of one particular lady who had hurled profanities. John told her that she didn’t need to apologise for her, that she was one individual and that what she had done did not reflect on her. John and Amélia spent quite some time in conversation with her, Amélia sharing some of the story of her childhood experiences of growing up in abject poverty and the way that God miraculously provided for her families needs through physical healing and through the provision of food.
The young woman was a lawyer from Scotland and she confided some of her own personal problems amongst other things to Amélia. Afterwards she thanked Amélia stating that she had been blessed after speaking with her
Another young woman joined in the conversation that John and Amélia were having with the Scottish lawyer and John was able to explain at length the Bible’s teaching on Redemption and Atonement. He covered on the subject of the Lamb of God spoken of by Abraham in Genesis 22:8 and how this lamb was revealed as being Jesus by John the Baptist. He also spoke of the prophesies contained in the Book of Daniel about the Messiah being put to death, but not for Himself. He would have spoken about the prophesies contained in Isaiah 53 however by now she had become so cold (she was visibly shivering) she needed to go back into the hotel.
A man came out of the conference to ask John concerning one of the portions of Sylvia Baker’s publication. John said that her might not be able to answer his question as the subject of Evolutionary Science was not his area of expertise. John, in fact, could not answer the question but agreed that he had raised a valid question and that he would have to look into this even more. It is no shame to admit ignorance of certain things. John’s field of expertise is in Linguistics which those whose concerns are in Biology, Paleontology, Physics and Chemistry are generally ignorant of. John listened to his comments and offered some of his own.
Another young woman from the conference approached the team and kindly offered them drinks of hot tea.
Miguel engaged with several other people who were attending the conference discussing matters of science and the Bible. Miguel explained about the issue of faith and how that faith was something that cannot be measured scientifically yet faith was a principle that everyone uses, even atheists.
Our earnest prayer is that God will use whatever we shared with people today. Seeds sown do not always sprout during the first season of planting, sometimes they take time to germinate and grow. The seed of the Gospel does not always convince straight away, sometimes the Holy Spirit needs to work upon a persons life in order to bring them to the point where they will, as the Prodigal Son, come to their senses and turn back to God.
We never need to feel intimidated by people who are skeptics and antagonistic towards Christ. The Apostle Paul’s own conversion was such that, even though he had become a believer, the believers in Jerusalem did not believe that he had become a follower of Christ. His reputation as a persecutor of the Church was such that when he was introduced to the believers many of them were very fearful of him.
But noone will ever become a believer if we, who have Christ, do not present the Gospel to them! Sadly most Christians in Manchester do not really believe the Gospel and prefer to avoid sharing it with people!
…necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel! (1 Corinthians 9:16)
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; (Romans 1:16)
For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. (1 Corinthians 1:21)
