Today John, Amélia and Miguel took the message of the Gospel into Manchester.
As John was preaching he was approached by a Muslim couple. The man was of Asian descent however his wife was an English convert. They both questioned John concerning the passage in John’s account of the Gospel were Christ spoke of the coming Comforter. They sought to “prove” that this promised Comforter was the prophet of Islam, Abū al-Qāsim Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib ibn Hāshim (Better known as Muhammed).
John proceeded to point out from John how that Jesus, Himself, had explained who this promised Comforter would be (in John chapter 14) the Holy Ghost, who is God! The man didn’t want to look at that particular verse, he only wanted to concentrate on the verse in John Chapter 15. The conversation began to get a little heated as both fired a salvo of questions without allowing John to respond or even listening to what he was saying.
Miguel approached them in order to deal with their questions, and also to free up John so that he could continue with preaching.
In the mean time we were joined by Tony an old friend from the Midlands who regularly comes up to Manchester to spread the Gospel. Like John and Miguel Tony has also been arrested for his uncompromising stance on the Scriptures a number of times in various parts of the country. Tony had been in town the day before when he came into conflict with a Muslim who threatened Tony with beheading. Apparently on Fridays and Sundays there are a number of Muslim Missionaries preaching Islam on Market Street. This we were not aware of. Please pray for all those who seek to stand up for Christ in the face of threats and intimidation from the enemies of the Cross!
Tony had brought some boards with him that contained scriptures as well as a list of the Ten Commandments. These draw people’s attention, especially the Ten Commandments. One woman, who claimed to be a Christian, became very angry about the displaying of the Ten Commandments. She began to hurl abuse at the team and stormed off. Another young woman became angry when she got to the part that states, “Thou shalt not commit adultery.” To which Tony had added the word “Lust”.
Many Christians declare that we shouldn’t preach the Law seeing as Christ is about, “Love, Grace and forgiveness”! Interesting that John Wesley stated,
“Before I preach love, mercy and grace, I must preach sin, Law and judgment.”
Spurgeon said, “They will never accept grace until they tremble before a just and holy Law.”
D.L. Moody, “God being a perfect God, had to give a perfect Law, and the Law was given not to save men, but to measure them.”
J.C. Ryle who authored most of the leaflets we distribute said, “People will never set their faces decidedly towards Heaven and live like pilgrims, until they really feel that they are in danger of Hell…Let us expound and beat out the 10 commandments, and show the length, and breadth, and depth, and height of their requirements. this is the way of our Lord in the sermon on the mount. We can not do better than to follow His plan.”
Postmodern Christians think differently. It offends their thinking, it embarrasses them and they reject firmly that message which was most definately held up by the Lord Jesus Himself, the Apostles of Christ and every preacher of any note throughout the centuries;
Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device. And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by [that] man whom he hath ordained; [whereof] he hath given assurance unto all [men], in that he hath raised him from the dead.
Every Saturday the team approached by an older lady who stops by to chat and discuss things with us. She is a believer and often engages with some of the people who stop to speak with them. As she was talking with John and Amélia a lady that she knew approached. amélia offered her a leaflet which she refused saying, “I´m a Born again!” She began to speak of her being banned from Local Betting shops and Gambling salons, that she was saving up money in order to redeem some jewelry she´d had to pawn in order to pay some gambling debts she had. However she believed that she was forgiven in spite of all her problems! This lady had obviously lived a very hard life, her face was marked with years of trouble and probable abuse, she came across as being quite uneducated. She was told, very gently, that we have to live out what Jesus said and do the things he taught us to do.
After she left John became quite emotional sharing with the believing lady how that this woman was the product of the Easy-Believism preached by so many Evangelicals. People are encouraged to sincerely repeat a “prayer unto Salvation” or a “Sinner’s Prayer” and as a result of this they are “Born Again” and saved! Churches across the country are full of people who have been persuaded that they are born again because they have repeated a prayer. Sadly this is totally unscriptural and is found nowhere in the New Testament.
When a person is truly born again they change, they are a NEW creature. The faith they profess will produce a change in their thinking as well as their actions and they will seek to live their lives in accordance to the will of God. No one who truly believes will remain the same!
Miguel had been surrounded by a group of “goths”. One of them stated that she was a believer, had received Christ and had even been baptised. However she was now distancing herself from Christ because people were continually judging her by how she was dressed and the type of music she listened to. Miguel and John engaged with them stating that we wouldn’t judge them because of their outward appearance. It was obvious that she had never been given the full Gospel and that she had been baptised as one who was not fully convinced of Christ. The fact that she had been led to believe that she was a true believer and could be baptised is yet another example of the malaise that has deepened in the Evangelical camp.
It was difficult to speak with her as the older men that were with her were intent on dismissing us as “Religious People!” John overheard them sharing about vampyrism and how that “These religious people only want you to conform to them. Whereas you need to be true to yourself!” John said that he just meant that she should conform to his ways. He was obviously one who had been involved in serious study of the occult, Satanism and the writings of Aleister Crowley for a number of years by the way he was speaking and the knowledge he possessed.
Eventually they all departed.
