John Miguel and Amélia took the Gospel to the street today.  Miguel preached concerning the vanity of religion as a means to obtain salvation.  That Salvation is by Grace through faith alone.

He took time to point out the errors, and dangers of various religious viewpoints and that only by faith in what Christ accomplished on our behalf when He died on the cross can save us.

He also preached against the evils perpetrated in the name of religion such as the recent scandals within the Roman Catholic Church.

John was approached by a young man who was very interested in hearing what John had to say about the nature of the Church, its role and function in the world.  He was very much in agreement.  He asked that John pray for him as he was to be preaching and was feeling nervous about it as he was going to challenge his church members on some of the very things John had touched on during their conversation.

While John was engaged in conversation with this young man another young man interrupted Miguel’s preaching as he did not like what Miguel had to say about Roman Catholic Dogmas.  He held up Miguel for quite a while so Amélia came over to John to ask him to help Miguel out.

It turned out that this young man was a Seminarist who had been training under the Dominican Order.  The Dominicans have aklways been considered important as producing some of the Catholic Church’s theologians.  In fact the Dominicans were called upon to be leading members of the Catholic Inquisition and enforcers of Catholic Orthodoxy.  However he left the order because of its compromises with non-catholics.

This young man was very educated and argued very forcebly against the doctrines of Evangelicalism, and for the need for Sacraments as the means by which we must obtain Grace from God.  He argued from the scriptures (although his interpretation was very much coloured).  John soon realised that the average Evangelical believer would struggle in debating with such a person for the simple reason that the average Evangelical is lacking in knowledge of the Doctrines of the Bible and Church History.  In fact, in these days of acceptance of Roman Catholicism as a legitimate expression of the Church, many weak Christians are becoming easy prey to these wolves in sheep’s clothing.  Many non-Catholics (including some well known Evangelicals) have even converted to Roman Catholicism as a result of dropping their guard against the Dogmas and doctrines of Roman Catholicism.
