PRIDE

Every year during the August Bank Holiday weekend the citizens of, and visitors to, Manchester are exhorted to have PRIDE!  The Bible has much to say about the subject of Pride:

[For] the sin of their mouth [and] the words of their lips let them even be taken in their pride: and for cursing and lying [which] they speak.” (Psalm 59:12)

The fear of the LORD [is] to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.” (Proverbs 8:13)

[When] pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly [is] wisdom.” (Proverbs 11:2)

Pride [goeth] before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.” (Proverbs 16:18)

A man’s pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit.” (Proverbs 29:23)

For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.” (Mark 7:21-23)

For all that [is] in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.” (1 John 2:16)

Of the proud God says:

Whoso privily slandereth his neighbour, him will I cut off: him that hath an high look and a proud heart will not I suffer.” (Psalm 101:5)

These six [things] doth the LORD hate: yea, seven [are] an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,” (Proverbs 6:16-17)

Every one [that is] proud in heart [is] an abomination to the LORD: [though] hand [join] in hand, he shall not be unpunished.”(Proverbs 16:5)

For the day of the LORD of hosts [shall be] upon every [one that is] proud and lofty, and upon every [one that is] lifted up; and he shall be brought low:”(Isaiah 2:11)

Hear ye, and give ear; be not proud: for the LORD hath spoken.” (Jeremiah 13:15)

This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.  For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,”
(1Timothy 3:1-2)

But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.” (James 4:6)

Pride is the height of rebellion in God’s eyes.  God likened Jerusalem (the capital city of Judah) to an adulterous whore and Israel & Samaria to Sodom and Gomorrah!  God calls Samaria “Sodom”:

Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.”
(Ezekiel 16: 49)

Even so Jerusalem was guilty of far worse:

Neither hath Samaria committed half of thy sins; but thou hast multiplied thine abominations more than they, and hast justified thy sisters in all thine abominations which thou hast done.”
(Ezekiel 16:51)

It was pride that caused the downfall of Heylel:

How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! [how] art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.” (Isaiah 14:12-15)

To this call for Pride God says:

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”
(2 Chronicles 2:14)

For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name [is] Holy; I dwell in the high and holy [place], with him also [that is] of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.” (Isaiah 57:15)

And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.”
(Matthew 23:12)

Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.” (James 4:10)
