THE “FIGHT TO SAVE MARRIAGE” IN THE UK.
The Biblical definition of Marriage is expressed this way:
“Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.”
(Genesis 2:24) From the very beginning of creation we see marriage defined in this way, a man leaves his parent’s household and is joined to his wife.
The Lord Jesus Christ repeats this,
“And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made [them] at the beginning made them male and female, and said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?” (Matthew 9:3-4) See also Mark 10:6-9.
Later on the definition is continued through the instruction of the Apostles:
“For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.”
(Ephesians 5:31) In fact Paul adds a further twist to this by stating that marriage is also a picture of Christ’s relationship to His Church, “This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.”(v.32)
For the true believer this definition of marriage is prescriptive (ie, definative and unchangeing) because this is a definition given by God Himself.
Marriage is also declared to be the only legitimate relationship where sexual relations can be justified, “Marriage [is] honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.”(Hebrews 13:4) Sexual relations outside of marriage are considered as adulterous, fornication and thus Whoremongering ! The warning of Apostle Paul concerning those that engage in sexual relations outside of marriage is very clear:
“Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.”
(1 Corinthians 6:9-10)
If this were not enough the Lord Jesus Himself spoke in this way:
“And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
(Revelation 21: 6-8)
UK law, for centuries, held to the Biblical definition of marriage. The British government eventually decided that only marriage ceremonies performed by a licenced registrar of the state would be recognised and that even if a couple were married in a “church ceremony” unless the Clergyman officiating over the ceremony where licenced their union was not recognised as being “official”. This is why many Christian couples in the UK, who have church weddings, still need to arrange for an official Registrar to be present in order to issue them with a Marriage Certificate.
In recent years governments across the European Union have been changing their laws in order to redefine the definition of marriage and thus permit people of the same gander to be married. Belgium, Iceland, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain and Sweden have all passed laws which redefine marriage. Outside of Europe Argentina, Canada and South Africa have also redefined marriage. In the USA there is no Federal recognition, however a number of individual states have also taken steps to change steps to recognise “same-gender marriages”.
The British Government has announced that they are planning to redefine marriage in line with other European States. They have also stated that churches and other religious groups will not be obligated to perform “Same Gender” weddings.
This has offended the three main religious groups in the UK; Christians, Jews and Moslems as each of these groups hold to the prescriptive definition of “Marriage” as being between a man and a woman. With this in mind the two larger Christian groups The Church of England and the Roman Catholic Church have formed an alliance in order to protest the Government’s proposal and bring pressure in order to get Parliament to reject any change to the current legislation thus preserving the traditional definition of marriage.
The main focus of this is the “Coalition 4 Marriage” and a petition is circulating the churches in the UK.
Many Conservative Evangelicals have been persuaded to sign the petition unaware of its Ecumenical roots. Those who have been aware of this and have refused to sign have been bullied by its supporters, according to reports we have received.
We would urge everyone to resist the Government’s attempts to redefine marriage, however we cannot endorse or recommend signing the Coalition 4 Marriage’s petition. We do recommend signing the Roman’s 13 Declaration which will be used to petition the Government
